Skills, Painpoints, and the Tools In Between

I’m looking for a new job. Next to my CV nobody reads past the top third, here’s what I actually work with and what interests me.

All these are not really in a particular order.

Languages

Mainly

PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS (scss, sass, less), JavaScript, TypeScript

Much Ai-driven development

Basically development changed from writing code to reviewing it in the last 1 and a half-ish years.

We tested ChatGPT, Claude, Kimi, Gemini, Grok…and we stayed with claude code, of course.

Teamlead

In my last job, I had a team of 5 developers where the CTO was a member himself.

Managing workloads, planning sprints and features, standups and directing technical development are fun.

But also running 1:1 sessions and giving direct feedback to management is my strong suit, when people are ready to hear the truth and direct feedback.

Security focus

I am focusing on cybersecurity for a few years now, reaching from hardening sshd to actively capturing some flags on weekends.

I focus mainly on website-based attacks (injections, reverse shells) and system insecurity (SSH, open ports, file traversal).

I also like developing security-related policies and maintaining their integrity in a company.

Selfhosting

I am privately and professionally a fan of self-hosting and therefore owning your stuff, when possible.

When professionally handling your software, it can be not much more work on a monthly basis, when it comes to updating or maintaining in general, but it always gives much more control over your data, your encryption and of course, your backups.

In the EU especially, since the GDPR, clients can be much more picky when it comes to hosting and data owning questions.

These are often simply answered (or done for) by telling them we are hosting on Hetzner, in Falkenstein, Germany. :D

DevOps & Infra

General hardware knowledge on top of all this, plus:

• GitLab CI, Github and Forgejo actions, the deployer PHP framework, Grunt, Gulp
• Linux servers, Windows Server, IIS (sadly)
• Linux in general, all things security, cronjobs, timers, services
• Docker & ^(podman|docker)$ compose, virtualization (VMware, QEMU/KVM) with and without GPU passthrough
• nginx, Apache, httpd, nginx proxy manager, caddy
• MariaDB, MySQL, Postgres, MSSQL, MongoDB
• Redis, RabbitMQ
• Networking and backup solutions, large scale enterprise hosting, auto-scaling
• Data and computer security, encryption in flow and at rest
• AWS: EC2, Elastic Beanstalk, Lightsail, RDS (minimal, luckily)

Tools I know and sometimes even use

kitty, Neovim, tmux or zellij is enough for most tasks.

But then come JetBrains everything (PHPStorm, PyCharm, IntelliJ, Android Studio, YouTrack), VSCodium, Zed, MAMP/XAMPP/LAMPP was long replaced by FlyEnv, SSMS (but tell nobody…please…), Redmine, Jira, draw.io, Confluence, InVision, Marvel, miro, LimeSurvey, Pipedrive, HubSpot, Personio, Slack, Matrix (Element), Microsoft office tools (sadly), Rundeck, ClamAV, Mindmeister, Graylog, Sentry or better GlitchTip,

Tracking, Analytics & Marketing

• Google Analytics - conversion handling, custom dashboards, Ads integration
• Google Ads / SEA - search engine advertising, digital campaigns
• Google Tag Manager - custom tracking: visitor behavior, clicks and scroll, DataLayer management for the weirder requirements, AMP tracking, PWA tracking (including custom implementations)
• Data Studio - dashboards and the statistics to back them up
• SEO - the technical and on-page kind

A Little Machine Learning

Basic, Python-based, nothing that would scare a data scientist: face recognition and similar toy project.

What I want next is fairly simple: a place that puts all of this to good use, with room to keep testing serious and enough trust to just build. If that’s you, you know where to find me.
